About The Event

The Beltane festival is a pagan celebration of fire, fertility, and rebirth, steeped in rich cultural significance. Historically held on the eve of May 1st, it marks the midpoint between the spring equinox and the summer solstice. Our ancestors believed this was a time when the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead was at its thinnest, allowing spirits to cross over and mingle with mortals.

Bring yourself, a friend, and some nibbles. This event will be held outside in the garden of the First Unitarian Church.

Here is what to expect:

Dear CUUPS Member,

Our Beltane Ritual and Celebration is fast approaching. The organizing committee has planned a fun and meaningful day, and there are a few things you should know in advance to make the most of the occasion.

When: The ritual will begin shortly after noon on Saturday, May 4th (May the 4th be with you). All are encouraged to arrive early (around 10:30 AM) to help with setup and participate in the ritual implanting of the May pole.

Who: This will be an all-ages event and child dependents of CUUPS members are welcome to join.

What to Wear: The ceremony will begin with a procession from the parish hall to the church garden. For the procession, people are welcome to wear masks, may crowns, or other festive attire, including noise makers such as bells.

What to Bring: If you are able and willing, everyone is encouraged to bring a flower. Everyone should also try their best to bring something to share (food or drink) for the potluck lunch after the ritual.

What to Do: The May Day celebration ritual enables broad participation, so come ready to either dance, sing, or dance and sing! Anyone interested in learning the music in advance (I'm looking at you, instrumentalists), should feel free to reach out to request a copy of the music.

How to Prepare: The intention we have set for this ritual is "healing the earth and the people on it." You'll be asked to impart a couple of blessings, including one for the earth and one for the people on it, which you may want to start thinking about in advance.

We're looking forward to seeing you all on the 4th!

"Heed the flower, bush, and tree--

By the Lady blessed you'll be."

~Crystal, Elise, and Penny
