How to get involved at First Unitarian
Here are seven ways to get more involved in the religious and social life at First Unitarian!
1. Come to Sunday morning worship services
The heart and soul of our congregation is Sunday morning worship. Each Sunday at 11:00 a.m., we gather for worship (and Sunday school for children), and following worship we come together during a social time for informal conversation and refreshments. The best way to start getting involved in the congregation is to come to worship services each week.
2. Participate in a fun activity
Throughout the year, you'll find there are numerous activities that you can easily get involved in -- from a barbeque after worship service, to shared dinners with other people from the church, to a quilting group. Watch the church newsletter for announcements of upcoming activities. If you're not yet receiving the church newsletter, call the church office at 508-994-9686 to get on the mailing list. You can also check the online calendar to find out about upcoming church events.

3. Deepen yourself religiously and spiritually
Periodically, the minister and lay leaders will offer opportunities to deepen your spirituality and your religious life outside of Sunday morning worship. In 2006-2007, our minister will offer a series of adult religious education classes on Monday evenings, as well as a spiritual autobiography course. Small group ministries form and reform over the course of the year; these are led by lay leaders. You can also make an appointment to meet with the minister to discuss how you might carry out your own program of religious growth and transformation.
4. Join a committee
Committee work is a chance to get to know other people in the church, to hone your leadership skills or oorganizational skills, and to help make the church a force for good in the world. Here's a sample of some committees you can join....
- The House and Grounds Committee oversees maintenance and aesthetics of the historic building and the surrounding grounds.
- The Religious Services Committee confers with the Minister about the weekly worship services, and other special worship services.
- The Religious Education Committee oversees educational programs for children, teens, and adults.
- The Membership Development Committee helps wlecome newcomers and visitors.
5. Teach Sunday school
Sunday school teachers commit to teaching every other week as part of a teaching team for a specific age group. Click here for a Sunday school teacher volunteer job description.
6. Become a member of the church
If you have been attending worship services regularly for at least a few months, and you find that you are in sympathy with what this congregation stands for, you should consider joining the church as a full voting member.
Membership confers the right to vote at congregational meetings. Membership also carries the responsibility of providing financial support (generally between one and eight percent of your gross income) and volunteering your time and talents. If you are considering membership, talk with the minister or the chair of the Board to find out more. Read a pamphlet about the meaning of membership in a Unitarian Universalist congregation.
7. Take on a leadership role
Once you're a full voting member of the congregation, new leadership opportunities open to you, such as joining the Board of Trustees to help shape the overall policy and direction of the congregation.
