Volunteer Job Description -- Sunday school teacher

Goal:

To promote the spiritual growth and transformation of the children of First Unitarian. Sunday school teachers engage in a teaching ministry with children that emphasizes fun, religious identity, community, and learning.

Time frame:

As a teacher, you commit to serving as a part of a teaching team with two other people for either the fall term or the spring term. Teaching teams divide up weekly responsibilities so that you will be with the children ten times in a term -- five times as lead teacher (where you prepare and lead the session), and five times as an assistant. For the weeks you are leading a session, plan on two hours of preparation and one hour with the children on Sunday morning. For the weeks when you are assisting another lead teacher, plan on one hour with the children on Sunday morning.

Statement of Accountability:

As a teacher, you report to and are supported by the Director of Religious Education and the Minister. Additional support comes from the Religious Education Committee.

Responsibilities:

-- Nurture children's spiritual growth and transformation in cooperation with their parents/ guardians, and the rest of the church community.
-- Plan Sunday morning sessions in cooperation with other members of your teaching team.
-- Lead Sunday morning sessions, or assist that week's lead teacher.
-- Pursue your own personal spiritual growth by attending worship services the weeks you are not teaching.
-- Help fulfill the RE Committee's overall goals and objectives.
-- Have fun!

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

-- Commitment to children's spiritual growth, and ability to see the inherent worth and dignity of every child.
-- Ability to work as a part of a teaching team.
-- Basic knowledge of what it means to be a religious liberal preferred.

All volunteers who work with minors must agree to and sign the Code of Ethics. Reference checks may be requested of volunteers working with minors. We ask that newcomers spend at least six months participating regularly at First Unitarian before volunteering as Sunday school teachers.
